Show Low is situated in the Navajo County, in the east central Arizona on the Mogollon Rim, 175 miles northeast from Phoenix and 195 miles north from Tucson. The city had been founded in 1870 and incorporated in 1953.
According to a legend Show Low got its name after a poker game between C.E. Cooley and Marion Clark. Because there was not enough space for both of them in the city, the two decided to let a poker game determine who must move. According to the story Clark said, "If you can show low, you win." Cooley turned up the deuce of clubs (the lowest possible card) and replied, "Show low it is." Thus Show Low's main street is named "Deuce of Clubs" in their memory.
Show Low is a tourist and commercial city because of its marvelous landscapes, fishing in mountain lakes, and a lot of natural spaces for hiking, camping, cycling, horseback riding and skiing. Show Low hosts a variety of exquisite shops, restaurants and entertainment venues for each tourist taste. Fishing is very popular in Rainbow Lake, Show Low Lake, White Mountain Lake and Fools Hollow Lake Recreation Area. Snow skiing can be practiced at Sunrise park Resort on the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation.
Show Low was endangered in June 18, 2002 by a large forest fire, the Rodeo-Chediski fire. The community had been evacuated, and the fire was not extinguished until July 7.
Show Low offers plenty of tourist attractions. 15 miles West of Show Low can be admired Arizona's only covered bridge. In the proximity of the city there are also Apache, Navajo, Hopi and Zuni Indian Reservations. Show Low has an indoor aquatic center, five golf- courses of 20 miles and a lot of motels and RV lodgings. On top of that, other community facilities include a library, a bowling alley, a few racquetball and tennis courts, an archery range, a lot of picnic spots and movie theatres.
Show Low has no property tax.
